Octaspire Privacy Policy

Effective 28 August 2026. Android app com.octaspire.app, published by Rory Vining.

Octaspire is an educational musical instrument app, available on Google Play for ages 5 and up. It does not require an account, does not show ads, and does not include analytics or tracking SDKs. This policy describes what happens on your device.

For how the app works, see the public overview.

Information we collect

We do not operate a server that collects your personal information. The app does not ask for your name, email, or location.

Microphone

Octaspire requests microphone access for instrument tuners and resonance capture, Voice Trainer (hearing your pitch, and Record song), and Keyboard Sample (one short note you sing or play). Audio for pitch and resonance is processed on your device. The app does not upload microphone audio for those features.

You can refuse or later revoke this permission in Android settings. Tuners, capture, Voice Trainer, and Sample will not work without it. The 3D instrument, keyboard playback, and tone generation still will.

Speech recognition (Record song)

If you use Record song in Voice Trainer, the app asks Android’s speech recogniser to transcribe words from the recording so they can be placed on the sheet music. Depending on the device, that may run on the device or use a Google speech service. Octaspire does not operate its own transcription server and does not receive a copy of that audio. You can skip transcription and type or edit lyrics yourself.

Internet

Internet permission is used so Android can run speech recognition when you transcribe a sung song. The rest of the app works offline.

Recordings and library

If you record a piece, notes and optional WAV or sheet-music files are stored in the app’s private storage on your device (ABC notation, guitar tab, audio, and PNG sheets). They stay on the device unless you choose Share, which opens Android’s share sheet so you can send a file yourself.

Settings on the device

The app may save simple preferences on the device, such as Voice Trainer range, scores, and whether on-screen instructions are expanded. That data is not sent to us.

Backups

If you use Android backup with your Google account, the system may include app data in your backup. That is between you and Google, not a copy sent to the developer.

Children and families

Octaspire is an educational app rated for ages 5 and up. Teachers, families, and children can use it without creating an account.

We do not collect personal information from children or from anyone else — no names, emails, or profiles. There are no ads and no tracking. Recordings stay on the device unless a parent or user chooses Share. Parents can refuse microphone permission in Android settings; the 3D instrument and keyboard still play.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated text will be published at this same address with a new effective date.
